He’s been a senior writer for The Athletic since 2018. He’s a past national president of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, a two-time winner of the Georgia Sportswriter of the Year award from the National Sports Media Association, and a longtime Baseball Hall of Fame voter who currently serves on the Historical Overview Committee that produces the Hall of Fame ballots for Era Committees to consider. O’Brien spent seven seasons on the Marlins beat for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and covered World Series championship teams in Miami (1997) and Atlanta (2021).
